Summer is up, school is over and kids are restless – they want to explore. Not all of us can take off and travel for the holidays, but nowadays you don’t have to… you can experience the diversity and multiculturalism of our beautiful country right at home! For example, this coming weekend, on July 5th and 6th, you can attend the 5th edition of the Latin American festival is happening in the heart of Vancouver on Granville between Smithe and Hastings. More than 40,000 children and adults are expected to attend.
Kids are usually fascinated and love to experience Latin American culture as it’s an amazing melting pot of many different ethnic influences. In its variety lies its richness and its colorfulness. And the community here in Vancouver is truly representative. Take for instance the 60 Spanish and Portuguese speaking nannies and babysitters currently actively looking for a family to work for on our site myBestHelper – they come from places like Peru, Mexico, Ecuador and Brazil and have embraced life in their adoptive country as new Canadians.
The aptly named Carnaval of the Sun – El Carnaval del Sol – recreates a Latin American fiesta experience in downtown Vancouver. Activities include outdoor salsa and zumba lessons, an arts and crafts market, an entire children’s tent, environmental education activities, face painting and more. It is a great opportunity to experience an authentic and diverse Latin American culture, food, arts and music.
And for the soccer enthusiasts – Granville street from Robson to Georgia will be transformed into a Mini World Cup Street Soccer Tournament. Teams of eight will represent a different country to play in the preliminary round on Saturday and for the championship on Sunday with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC presenting the winning trophy.
